"Fine," said Master Rossi. "He'll be locked up until he confesses."

"Let me do it," said Anselmo, shoving Giorgio into the closet.

Giorgio was hurting all over his whole body, but most painful to bear were the false accusations. If Angeletta had not intervened, they'd have beaten him to death. Even the master didn't trust him anymore. And suddenly he was gone. Where?

When Signora Rossi or Anselmo scolded him, Giorgio no longer responded. Then he heard the sounds of dinner.

Then the doors of the room closed. It was dark.

Then… a door opened. "Angeletta?" Giorgio whispered, lifting his head.

"No, it's me," Anselmo said in a low voice. "Listen, thief. Are you going to go on slandering me to my father?"

Suddenly Giorgio understood: several days before, he had seen Anselmo in the gang of the pockmarked boy. When Giorgio mentioned the matter later, Anselmo threatened revenge if Giorgio told on him.

"You think he's going to believe you? He has already gone to the police about you. Tomorrow they're coming to get you."

Anselmo stuck out his tongue and disappeared.

Police! Jail? Giorgio thought about how he would be led away. What if they heard about it back home? What would Nonna and Anita think? Nobody could get him out of this fix. Or might Alfredo...?

Giorgio felt along the wall behind the trash. Long ago, when he first came here, he had observed two loose boards. But after Angeletta got him to come to her in the evenings, he no longer thought about them. But now...
